Crack the Code

Let’s pretend!  It is game day.  Kansas Jayhawks versus Mizzou Tigers.  Big game.  You have all your buddies over at your house and they are hogging up the sofa.  That’s ok; you’ll chill on the floor.  It’s best to stretch out anyway.  Before the game you all decide to order a pizza because you’re starving.  While you’re waiting for the pizza to come you throw back a few alcoholic beverages and toss taunts to the supporters of the other team.  The pizza arrives and you beat everyone to the box.  You take your 5 slices that are piled on your paper plate and lay back down on the floor.  Enter the yippy dog.  Yep, your buddy has an annoying yippy dog that is now trying to get your pizza.  You can’t allow this.  So, now your starving, have a plate full of food, you’re drunk, and a dog is trying to take your prize.  You execute a move from the laying down position that can only be catagorized as novel and heroic.  Keeping the plate of pizza balanced above your head so that the dog doesn’t get it, you roll up on your elbow.  You’re drunk and wobbly so you gotta keep your head up and you are so hungry you are focused on the pizza and not the yippy dog.  You move from your elbow to your hand, then to a strong lunge position and finally home free…upright.  The pizza is yours.

What I just described to you is the first half of a turkish get up.  Kind of.  Without the pizza and alcohol and yippy dog.  Except in the video I linked up there is a dog in the video!  As with most things at CrossFit, while they might look easy they are actually quite challenging when you’re going full speed in a workout.  Today’s WOD was full of this core-strengthening goodness.

WOD 2/24/2010

For Time
25 toes to bar
50 turkish get ups (15 & 20 lbs kettlebell)
50 sit ups
50 bicycles (R/L=1)
50 medicine ball suitcases (8lb med ball)
25 toes to bar

I finished in 23:11 rx’d!  Yep, I did it rx’d!  The toes to bar moves were not the prettiest but done none-the less.  I love the feeling when I finish a workout rx’d.  As you probably realized from my description earlier, I looked like a drunken spectator while doing the get ups.  If only I could have seen myself.  It would provide entertainment for all.  I parked myself right smack in front of the class too so everyone got to see my amazing-ness.  :)   While I’m talking about how amazing I am, I’m just going to pat myself right on the back for actually getting up this morning.  I don’t mean turkish get ups, I mean getting out of bed!  I didn’t get to bed until late last night and the very last thing I wanted to do when my alarm went of this morning was workout.  I had to tell myself some pretty darn mean things to make my booty exit the warmth of my bed but in the end I’m glad I did.  The whole way to the gym this morning I was telling myself how awesome I am for getting up.  Hey, you do what it takes!  If it takes some stern and then encouraging self-talk from me then I’m going to do it.

Just to leave you with a few things non-workout going on in my house, here’s the summary:

  • Basketball time.  It’s nearing tournament time so Ry and I are going places cheering on our teams.  Go Bearcats and Go Jayhawks!
  • Reading.  I’m halfway through the book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
  • Running.  I am not running a marathon this weekend.  Sigh.  Big decision but the best one.  I’m pulling out of Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans.
  • Olympics.  I heart the Olympics and will find myself glued to the TV again this week.  Ready for arials and women’s figure skating!
  • Church.  Fantastic sermon this past week about love and what matters most.  Check it out- it will hit you in the gut and challenge you.

TODAY I LOVE: my life…it’s pretty darn sweet

I’ve done those get-ups before; they’re not to be taken lightly! Very glad you’re feeling better.

Linden and I are contemplating a marathon relay in April. Would you be interested in a leg? Or in joining us for the half marathon on June 12?

Miss you! We must hang out soon!
