Go Hard

As defined by Wikipedia, a burpee is a full body exercise used in strength training and as aerobic exercise.  It is performed in 5 basic steps:

1)      Begin in a standing position

2)      Drop into a squat position with your hands on the floor in front of you

3)      Kick your feet back, while simultaneously lowering yourself into a push up

4)      Immediately return your feet to the squat position, while simultaneously pushing up with your arms

5)      Leap up as high as possible from the squat position with your arms overhead and clap.

All in all, it doesn’t sound that complicated, does it?  CrossFit uses burpees in workouts all the time either as a stand alone exercise or in conjunction with some other movement.  A burpee can be morphed with almost any other exercise and let me tell you, those CrossFit trainers go willy nilly pairing them with other moves.  Burpee box jumps, burpee deadlifts, burpee pull ups…you name it and you they have probably put a burpee with it and called it a day.

Last night in my attempt to become all paid up in my missed CrossFit sessions I completed my 200 burpee deficit.   Before all of you go on and give Coach B grief about making me do 200 burpees, hold those tongues.  It’s my fault.  Had I not missed, nor missed so many this wouldn’t even be an issue.  And now that I’m finished with those 200 burpees I can safely say that his challenge to me paid off.  I don’t want to do that again.  Point to Coach.

I learned a few other things while I was performing 200 burpees too.

1)      If doing them on carpet be prepared for random carpet burns.  I’ve got burns on my elbows, knees, and stomach.  To the outsider that is a little hard to explain.

2)      No matter how hot you are turn the ceiling fan off.  In the heat of battle it is hard to remember to dodge rogue ceiling fan blades when you’re leaping back up.

3)      If doing burpees in a home with pets be aware that they are intrigued by your activity and will get as close as possible to observe.  George loved watching my feet so much that every time I jumped back to the plank position I nearly kicked him every time.  Jerry loved to lay by my hands in the hope that every few burpees I would rub his belly.  Ok, so I kind of encouraged that one by rubbing his belly every 20 or so burpees.

4)      Unlike running, it doesn’t get any easier.  I kept hoping after the first 50 or so I’d get in a groove and it would be so bad.  That doesn’t happen.

Today, burpees out of my head, Ryan and I got up and ran 3 miles with Ashley and Katie.  It was an interesting run.  Can’t say it was the best run any way I look at it, but all in all we got up and got the miles done.  This was Ryan’s first time getting up so early during the week to run.  Although he grumbled a little at first I don’t want to speak too soon but I think he might have liked it.  It sure is nice having your run out of the way by the time your day starts.  Not only that but you avoid the heat!
